7. Cadence Design Systems

Enabler: Electronics Hardware, Development Tools

Cadence is transforming the IoT with its comprehensive IP portfolio and EDA tools which help in the creation of today’s integrated circuits and electronics.

• The firm’s wide range of IP fulfil the specific requirements of IoT chip designs. These IPs include wireless and wired interface IP, low-power memories, DSP and controller cores, verification IP, as well as Sensor IP solutions.

• The company’s popular Tensilica Fusion DSP core is ideal for designing IoT chips with many advanced capabilities such as wearable activity monitoring, indoor navigation, face trigger, voice trigger, etc.

• The firm has an expertise in electronic design automation (EDA) technology and offers some of the industry’s most popular EDA tools including OrCAD, Allegro, and Sigrity. OrCAD is a suite of products which includes a schematic editor (Capture), a circuit simulator (PSpice) and a PCB designer. The firm’s PSpice technology offers a large circuit simulation library to make it an ultimate solution for the IoT market.

• The firm recently announced various changes in its OrCAD Capture, PSpice Designer and PCB Designer tools. These improvements, according to Cadence, will help reduce the PCB development time for smaller, smarter devices such as IoT and wearables.

8. Cisco

Enabler: Connectivity, Cloud & Analytics Solutions, Development Tools

Quite optimistic on its IoT projections, the US-based networking giant Cisco, has predicted that there would be 50 billion connected devices by 2020.

  • Cisco’s primary IoT solutions for connecting these IoT devices are its networking equipment including industrial access points, routers and switches.
  • Apart from network connectivity, Cisco’s IoT framework focuses on fog computing, security, data analytics, management and automation.
  • For Data analytics, Cisco has rolled out IoT Field Network Director, a software scaled to manage 10 million or more devices, and Fog Data Services which are software services that deliver edge analytics, control, and security for data in the fog.
  • Fog computing is growing in popularity because some IoT experts believe it is simply inefficient to transmit all the data, from an IoT device, to the cloud for processing and analysis. In a Fog computing environment, much of the processing takes place in a data hub on a smart mobile device or on the edge of the network (in a smart router or other gateway device).

9. Cypress Semiconductor Corporation

Enabler: Electronics Hardware, Development Tools

Semiconductor firm Cypress has a broad range of offerings to drive the IoT – including its flagship PSoC programmable system-on-chip (SoC) families, CapSense touch sensing and TrueTouch solutions for touchscreens, and Traveo MCUs.

• PSoC 4 BLE is the company’s unique offering for anyone looking to create wearables or low energy sensor systems used in the IoT. The fact that sets it apart is it combines a MCU + BLE Radio along with CapSense touch-sensing and analog components like op-amps and comparators — are in one single chip, which greatly decreases the prototype time of any project. This chip is made very easy-to-use with the free GUI-based tools integrated in the PSoC Creator IDE.

• Cypress further strengthened its IoT solutions by acquiring Broadcom’s IoT products and IP for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Zigbee connectivity, along with its WICED platform and SDK for developers. These tools are now combined with Cypress’ own PSoC products which previously provided only memory, computing, and graphics processing, to offer a full range of solutions for building connected IoT devices.

• In the renewable energy arena, Cypress offers a Solar Powered IoT Kit for the development of a solar-powered IoT devices with BLE connectivity.
